You may be wondering if your decision to give up meat is the right one. Although people considering this will ask what difference will one person make? While it might be true that one extra person won’t make a huge statistical difference in a world of meat-eaters, you can do a lot as an individual that will be good for you and good for hundreds of animals. Health is one issue which you cannot escape from as it is the consumption of meat that is the number one cause of heart disease in the United States.

Circulatory, heart problems, high cholesterol and heart attacks are primarily caused by the regular consumption of dairy products, eggs and meat; a reduction in this consumption would lower these health problems. The figures speak for themselves when a person who eats meat is four times as likely to suffer a heart attack as someone who is a vegetarian. Pure vegans have an even lower likelihood of a heart attack with only a 10 percent chance against a meat eater. The heart is only one organ that benefits from a vegetarian diet because there are other health advantages.

Normal, everyday food contains a whole host of preservatives (especially common in meat) that has shown links with many types of cancer. Of course vegetarians will not be exposed to the number of additional hormones that are fed to cattle as part of their feed and will not experience some of the hormone problems people have because of this. Another substance, lactose, is also missing from their diet which has causal links with digestive conditions. On a more ethical note, you will be surprised how much less suffering in animals you will be responsible for by becoming a vegetarian.

One particular study illustrates this point by claiming that the average American is responsible for the death (for food) of over two thousand seven hundred animals during their life. Just in a couple of decades, many hundreds of animals would not need to loose their lives if you were to make this commitment. If you were also to give up dairy products and eggs, many battery hens and cows would not need to be used to feed you. The arguments are very convincing and difficult to dismiss; it is definitely better to become a vegetarian. It matters to the thousands of animals you could potentially save and it matters to you as an individual because you can greatly reduce your chances of getting cancer and heart disease.
